“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God! His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion, in the far north, the city of the great King.” Psalm 48:1-2
“You are the light of the world; a city on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14
“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” Revelation 21:2
As Jesus begins his formal ministry, he proclaims to his followers that they are a city. He is making a statement about their identity. The name New City, therefore looks to the present. Followers of Jesus are a city. And this city is recognized by its good deeds and conduct, reflecting the glory of God in heaven (Matt 5:16, 1 Peter 2:12).
The name, New City, also reminds us of our past. This city is made up of individuals who were dead in their trespasses, enslaved to sin, and without identity (Eph 2:1, Gal 4:3, Hos 1:6). But God, in his love, sent His only Son on a rescue mission (John 3:16). Because God is rich in mercy, these individuals have been brought to life, adopted into the family of God, and have been declared God’s people (Eph 2:4-5, Gal 4:5-6, 1 Pet 2:10).
Finally, the name New City, looks to the future. In the book of Revelation, Scripture declares that God “will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. (Rev 21:4).” God’s people will live with Him in a city, and that city will be the new Jerusalem. Christians look to this city as a reminder that God is not ambivalent or distant from their current pain and brokenness. Instead, they are rooted in a hope that He will redeem and restore all things in His New City.
