2015 will see New City Church spending a lot of time in John’s Gospel. Twenty-two weeks, in fact. Its a great book to spend so much time in.
John’s Gospel is one of the most popular books in all of the bible for a reason. I’ve heard it said that it is simple enough for a child and novice to the faith to wade in and deep enough for the philosopher and scholar to drown in. That sounds like the kind of book we should study.
But what’s the point of studying John’s Gospel?
John tells us at the end of his writing.

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.      (John 20:24-31 ESV)

John’s motive and the primary theme of his account of Jesus’ life and ministry is that we may “Believe in Jesus.”

Every story and bit of information he gives us is with the hope purpose that we may know Jesus for who he is, God’s Son and the savior (Christ) of the world.  That we may believe in him and have life in his name.

To that end I want to extend an invitation and a challenge.  I want to challenge you to read one chapter a day in John’s Gospel for 22 weeks in 2015.  If you do, you will have read John’s Gospel more than 7 times.  SEVEN times!  You will know John’s Gospel well.

I think the constant and consistent reading and application of God’s Word is the best thing you can do in 2015 in knowing, loving and following Jesus.

As you read, ask two questions:

1) What does this text tell me about Jesus? (Who he is and what he has done.)

2) What am I going to do about it? (what is your right response to Jesus in light of #1?)

I hope this helps you know, love and follow Jesus.

Grace,

E
